last week's debate. the real clear politics average of all polls show mitt romney taking a .7% lead on president obama. the race was this tight a month ago. right after the republican national convention and right before the democratic national convention. we have been here before. the race has followed this pattern for awhile. when mitt romney makes gain, the polls tend to show the candidates tied. but if you listen to right-wingers like ann colter, this race is already over. >> i think it is over. the reason i think it's over, of course, i thought it was over last week and the week before. romney is going to win. the reason he's going to win is this was the most-watched debate since 1980 when ronald reagan ran against carter and there was only one debate that year. >> fox news is pulling out all the stops. check out the electoral prediction map fox trotted out today. look at the red states. they gave mitt romney solid democratic states like new mexico and pennsylvania. really? polls should be a snapshot of the current state of the race and there's no doubt mitt romney is benefitti

obama and mitt romney meet for the second of three debates, brand-new poll numbers show the candidates locked in a virtual dead heat. according to a new "washington post" abc news poll of likely voters, 49% favor president obama compared to 46% who back governor romney. those numbers are basically where they were two weeks ago and within the polls' margin of error. however that doesn't mean mitt romney didn't get a big boost from his win. republicans' enthusiasm for their candidate has soared to 59% now, including an 11-point gain in just the past two weeks. both the romney and obama campaigns are expressing concern about the moderator of tuesday's second presidential debate. candy crowley of cnn will be hosting the debate, and she suggested that she'll play a larger role than agreed to by the candidates. according to mark hallpren of ""time" magazine" the two campaigns have raised objection saying the moderator's participation should be much more limited than she's leading people to believe. crowley has suggested she'll ask follow-up questions, which is not part of the agre

showed a dramatic shift toward romney. this poll covers the four days sibts the debate and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other polyp that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, editorial director of the "huffington post," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gentlemen, thank you for joining us. al

about this. the debate hurt obama and helped romney, and romney's gotten a bump in the polls, although it seems to be flattening out. you look at the new poll in ohio, the president is at 51%, romney is at 47%. i think the president, the fundamental structure of the race hasn't been changed, but if he doesn't go on the attack, if biden doesn't do a good job against ryan, and if the president doesn't show up and isn't strong in the second debate, then you're going to have a tossup race. >> well, i would disagree with your approach, first of all. i don't approach it that way. that's going back and relegating all the old arguments. in spirit what i would do, unlike shrumy, i would take the big issue that is separating the candidates, don't get into the little trench warfare about what's your tax plan and where were you on medicare two weeks ago. i would say where did you stand on saving the american auto industry? you had one position, i had another position. where are you on equal pay? republicans are against equal pay by law. these are big differences. don't talk about big bird one more

leading by 2 points. the pew research center has a similar poll. romney up by 4 points in the pew poll. in the swing states, mr. romney leading in colorado by 4. mr. obama leading in pennsylvania by 2, the right poll showing a tie in nevada. the president up in new hampshire by 6 points. and really the one poll we waited on all day, the one poll that might matter more than any other single piece of data, the one piece we got today, president obama holding on to a 4-point lead in ohio. let's poll this one out. this is a cnn number from this afternoon. barack obama with an edge of 4 points in ohio, which is just outside the margin of error. it's far less than the 9-point leads in the survey not long ago. i should say to democrats and obama supporters, i'm sorry if i unleashed those numbers on you with a mature content warning label. but my friend e.j. dionne will be with us later. he says, i was talking with an old friend who was one of the nonpartisan polling outfits. we were discussing the large shifts in some of the polls on the presidential election and the feedback he receives

polls on seeing that 47% of americans now see mr. romney more favorable, highest favorable rating so far, but he's still under water, 51% of northwesterns see it unfavorably. only four other candidates, carter, mondale. george h.w. bush and john kerry were under water in popularity polls at this point in the race. they all lost. meanwhile, the president is also at a popularity high with 5% favorability rate, 44% unfavorable. he's high in ohio because unemployment has fallen down 3.5% since 2009. in the state of ohio it's down to 7.2%. is barack obama going to win ohio, in your opinion? >> reverend, he's going to win ohio, and he will win ohio big. here in the northern part of ohio, the recovery in the auto industry, the hiring that's happening in the steel industry, the work that's happening in energy exploration and natural gas, driving steel production, all the investment we have seen in manufacturing, this president has made a big difference across ohio. if he can a congress that worked with him -- >> so you believe the president will win big. >> i believe he will win big. i certa

romney was having that terrible time. i think a lot of us got carried away in the other direction when obama flopped in the first debat debate. i think we've seen swings in polls, but the fundamentals of the race haven't changed that dramatically. now maybe obama will do something tomorrow to make it change nor dramatically, but it still seems like the fundamentals are where they've been for a long time now. >> steve, what do you think about this new trend to aggregate the swing state polls andle that will tell you what? >> no. there's a new one out today that takes 10, 12, 15 of so-called battleground states and gives you romney is ahead by two points. can we do away with these in the future? these have no value whatsoever. give me the national numbers and individual state numbers. we have no historical basis for comparison for a bunch of battlegrounds. we can look at national horse race numbers, aat this point they were here and today they're here. this gives us a way to compare the races. you can't do that with 12 random battleground states thrown together. you don't know when that

republican expectations for ryan to clobber biden are through the roof. in that pew poll, 78% of republicans believe ryan will do better in the debate, compared to 62% of democrats who say the same about joe biden. ryan has to defend both his record and mitt romney's, and in some cases, those two tasks midi verge. the bottom line for ryan, he has to prove he's ready to be president. that is tonight's most important test, and one that i think a lot of people miss when it comes to what a vp debate means. ryan's readiness, of course, on foreign policy, that's going to come up as well. tonight's 90-minute debate is divided between domestic and foreign policy, and moderator martha raddatz says she will alternate between the two in nine ten-minute segments. each segment will have a response followed by untimed discussion. libya will indeed come up tonight. speaking of libya, that was the subject of a heated congressional hearing yesterday that was one part spectacle and one part substance. the bottom line, no part of the hearing was good for the white house. two former security officer

debate campaigning, the poll numbers clearly have now shifted in mitt romney's favor. in the new national poll out from the pew research center, governor romney is now tied with the president. romney trailed in this survey by 9 points before the debate. so that's a big shift toward mitt romney and away from barack obama in that poll. like wise in the new gallup poll, mr. romney polled even with the president after the debate erasing a 5-point advantage for the president. we have new polls from the swing states and near swing states. polls that include reaction to the first debate. in wisconsin today the president leads by just two points. that's according to a relatively left-leaning poll. that particular poll previously showed the president having a 7-point lead before the debate. in colorado, in one right-leaning poll romney is now up by 3 points. the same showed him losing by 5 before the debate. now he's up by 3. in virginia, the president is ahead by 3 in virginia. that same poll had the president's lead at 5 points before the debate. that shows the president's lead shrinkin
